Lost Tales: The Battle Terminal Wars

Introduction

In the Digital World, there are many stories that are shrouded in mystery, with facts still needing to be discovered. Even though not everything has been discovered yet, there are certain elements that haven’t been properly archived, and a quick summary could do wonders for future research. The “Lost Tales” are a series of records of incomplete mysteries in the history of the Digitial World, here, all the available information regarding the events is going to be archived for future usage.

This particular tale takes place in a mysterious era right after the “Digimon Chronicles” story.

The First Terminal War

After the results of Project Ark in D.C. 2003, a new era in the Digital World started, and Digimon studies continued to be developed by researchers. However, little is known about what really happened initially and what the details of the research were. What is known is that as part of the use of a device named “Digimon Accel”, which made use of D.N.A (Digimon Natural Ability) as a decisive factor in evolution, it was possible to discover new forms of evolution named “Blast Evolution“.

After the first versions of the Digimon Accel a new device known as the “Digimon Mini” was made, and with this, a new face in the world of Digimon was revealed, Agumon Hakase, who worked at the Digital World University and was the Digimon with the most knowledge about Digital World. He appeared from the digital world to answer questions about Digimon and their world, as well as to introduce them to people who had never heard of that before (Such as the new Digimon Navigator Q Kiyo-kun).

Starting from this, a big advancement in human influence in the Digital World was revealed, and it was happening on many fronts, such as the development of the Digivice iC that made use of Digisoul and the DigiWindow used to analyze Digimon and clear missions that happen in the Digital World with the support of the DATS organization.

Another method of interfering with the Digital World was the “Battle Terminal” that was installed all over the country. The Battle Terminal allowed Tamers to Log-in the Digimon from the Digivice iC or Cards into the Digital World and make battles in the Digital Space. However, powers attempted to hack the Battle Terminal machines, and strange Digimon started to appear.

It was discovered what was going on: the Seven Great Demon Lords were discovered in the Battle Terminal Program; they appear to have illegally gained access to the program, and Demon of the Seven Great Demon Lords began to appear in Battle Terminals across the country at first. With the help of Tamers, the researchers were able to find a way of summoning Demon in the Battle Terminals, and by attacking it, they were able to stop Demon’s invasion. This was, however, just the start.

After that, each one of the Seven Great Demon Lords started to appear in the Battle Terminals. The order was, after Demon, Leviamon, Belphemon that has just awakened from its 1000-year sleep, Beelzebumon, Barbamon, Lucemon Falldown Mode, and finally Lilithmon. One by one they were found by the Tamers all over the country and defeated. However, defeating Lilithmon wasn’t the end of the danger, she disappeared after shouting mysterious words.

…Don’t think it’s going to end like this…

The Second Terminal War: L&R Conflict

The Four Holy Beasts that protect the Digital World go out of control!!

After the Seven Great Demon Lords were defeated by the Tamers from all over the country, they released a Crack Program named “Tempest” that slowly started to infect the Digital World and Digimon. After a momentary period of peace, Tempest’s actions started to show their effects. The program is capable of eroding data, including that of a Digimon’s digicore. The program’s initial effect is that Digimon begins to lose their senses and control. In 4 continents of the Digital World ruled by the Four Holy Beasts, the Tempest Program affects the guardians and the Digimon who live around their enshrined sanctuaries, making them all go out of control. With this, the Digital World returned to a state of chaos, and it was at risk of collapsing.

Around this time, the culmination of ten years of Digimon Research, Digimon Twin, was completed, following the steps of the original Digital Monster, Digimon Accel, and Digivice iC. This new device made use of the IR technology developed with Digivice iC and was able to break the seals in a Digicore and release powers that were once unavailable. Using this new device and the Battle Terminal 02 as a login point, Tamers accessed the Digital World and used their Digimon to fight the infection, destroying the Tempest Program and allowing the Digimon to be cured of it.

However, in order to make use of the Digimon Twin technology, two different devices that are paired to two different factions in the Digital World were made: R (Revolution) with Dragon Digimon that excels in power and L (Liberation) with Beast Digimon that excels in speed. Due to their different fighting styles, Tamers started to fight each other for the pride of being the “strongest”, and so the Digital World that still had the Tempest Program infection became a battlefield between two Tamer factions that tried to save the world.

In the middle of this battle, it was thought that there would be at least one Tamer between those two factions that could be the “strongest” and save the world. With this in mind, a certain Tamer wanted to make a big tournament in order to find out who would be that Tamer.

He was Commander Yu, a top-class Tamer who mastered everything about the two versions of the Digimon Twin and used up to 8 of them at the same time. Yu decided to watch over the two groups and unify them with a friendly competition that would bring forth cooperation between the two; those are the L&R Battles. He intends to use an event known as the “D-1 LR Battle” to determine who the strongest Tamers are.

The first Holy Beast to be fought was Baihumon of the West. Using the Battle Terminal 02 Tamers could access File Island and the Folder Continent and go to places like Register Grassland on File Island or Short Forest and Codec Ruins on the Folder Continent. Baihumon was found by a Dracomon that evolved into Coredramon (Green) who fought against the beast and protect the forest. Later on, Baihumon was found and finally defeated at the top of the Codec Ruins on the Folder Continent.

The second of the Four Holy Beasts was Xuanwumon and it appeared on a mysterious continent known as the “Forest of the Gods”.Moving from places such as the Overflow Beach and the Scrap Factory until finally getting into the Script Forest in this new Continent. Somewhere in the continent, located in the far north, a great battle between the Holy Beast and Groundramon started. The final battle against Xuanwumon would happen in the Script Forest.

The battle against the third beast happened on the WWW Continent, a mysterious continent with many new Digimon. There, Qinglongmon fought against Breakerdramon, a Digimon said to incarnate pure destruction. The final battle happened at the top of a place called the “Assemble Tower“, which touches the skies. There Qinglongmon fought against two Tamers of the L and R armies, alongside them were Dukemon of the Royal Knights and a Metal Garurumon. However, because they lacked cooperation and only fought in their own styles, they were defeated without inflicting any damage on Qinglongmon. It was only when they decided to cooperate that they were able to defeat the Holy Beast. However, it was too late, and the two Digimon were already dying. At that point, Qinglongmon unleashed a program on their data that influenced the reincarnation process, and the resulting Digitama were unlike anything seen before.

The last of the Four Holy Beasts was Zhuqiaomon, guardian of the south, and it also appeared on the WWW Continent. There it fought against a Digimon known as “Slayerdramon”. The final battle against Zhuqiaomon happened at a place known as the Boot Volcano. Although this seemed to be the end of the danger, a mysterious shadow started to manifest on the WWW Continent as the Seven Great Demon Lords reappeared.

In the middle of the 4 continents, a mysterious new continent appeared. Huanglongmon, the guardian of the Digital World who rules the Earth (World), was also out of control and attacked in the “Trash Hole” located in the middle of the continent. To fight against it appeared Examon of the Royal Knights, a Digimon that stands at the top of the Dragon Species and is the Jogress between Breakerdramon and Slayerdramon.

The battle against Huanglongomon still wasn’t over. Still on the mysterious continent, in a place called “Demon’s Valley” a new opponent appears, the Super Demon Lord Ogudomon who incarnates all the sins of the world. As a being that surpasses even the Seven Great Demon Lords, it seems that their ultimate plan was to summon Ogudomon; could it have been that the invasion at the first Battle Terminals and the spread of the Tempest Program and eventual L&R conflict led to the summoning of this Super Demon? Little is known about what exactly happened during the first two Terminal Wars, but there’s always hope that new information will appear in the future.

Interesting chapter of Digimon history. Thanks for compiling this lore info, Ravel. Specially given the brief nature of something like the Battle Terminals, which are not accessible anymore, I assume.

So, I’m guessing that lore detail about Z’d Garurumon and Victory Greymon coming from a Metal Garurumon and a Dukemon is from this setting, correct? Will there be a follow up where we see them more explicitly?

    Anyway, nice work. 🙂

    1. In part, yes. Technically speaking, the Metal Garurumon and Dukemon story ended with the whole “never seen before Digitamas,” and it didn’t reveal what they became. But in the Digimon Twin there’s a mechanic event with Qinglongmon that gives, so the Storyline seems to be a reference to that. In Digimon World Re:Digitize the evolution conditions for Z’d Garurumon and Victory Greymon seem to be a reference to this.

But how much people accept that without a direct “that is what it is” isn’t always the same. It’s surprising how many people object to any kind of implied connection between works that don’t explicitly state so and simply accept everything as is without considering the bigger picture.

I’m working on a Personal Log about that subject, talking more directly about the challenges of Multimedia Projects in regard to story, lore, and interpretation. I think it’s going to be my last blog post of the year. I’ll start next year with a Digimon Gear history post discussing the settings of all the Digital Monster Toys and Digivices. Since it’s going to include the Digimon Twin, I’m going to address Victory Greymon and Z’d Garurumon there.
